Weekly Devotion June 26, 2023

This Devotion was written by Sportsmen Devotional and posted with permission Bible Study Verse: Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for you souls. (NIV) Thoughts: I have had some wonderful experiences learning from skilled outdoorsmen from flyfishing, long-range shooting, and backcountry snowmobiling. It’s not hard to be humbled when learning from people much more talented than myself. But what really draws me in is when they impart their time and knowledge and humble themselves with servitude to teach their students all they know, withholding nothing. Philippians 2:4-7 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. “Meekness

2023 Quetico Fishing Trip

Image
At the beginning of June a small group of MOTO members had the opportunity to travel to the Quetico Provincial Park Canada for a week of fishing and fellowship.  The group traveled approximately 30 miles into the wilderness to lakes that are not heavily fished or traveled on by others.  The weather was perfect, sunny and breezy most days.  The fishing was amazing with almost everyone getting a grand slam at least one day (Grand Slam = 1 northern, 1 bass, 1 walleye, 1 lake trout).  Larry Klug caught the biggest fish of the week, a 41.5" northern.  With Pete Burton's help they got the northern into the canoe to measure it before releasing it back into the cool water.  The group was blessed to have the time together in the wilderness to slow down and remove themselves from the distractions of life. We look forward to traveling to the Quetico next year.

2023 Lac Vieux Desert Fishing Trip

Image
The Men of the Outdoors made its’ annual trip to Lac Vieux Desert for 2 1/2 days of fishing. Bob Dailey served as our host and made all of his facilities available to us. Bob is an awesome host and we appreciate all he does for us. We began each day with a devotion drafted by Christian Anglers Association. Our first devotion was entitled “Id Rather Be”. The theme of the devotion was that it’s ok to have a passion to fish as long as our priorities are in order namely our faith, home live, work and then fishing. Our second devotion was entitled “A Secret Meant to be Shared”. This devotion showed how we can use our passion for fishing to share the Gospel. Having started the day with a devotion we were now ready to get serious about fishing. Each day was a little different but our results were fairly consistent. Our primary species were bluegills and perch. We did catch a number of Northerns. The bluegills ranged from 7” – 9” and the perch 8”-11”. Paul Schultz caught the largest fish a Nor

This Devotion was written by Sportsmen Devotional and posted with permission Bible Study Verse: Psalm 31:7 “I am overcome with joy because of God’s unfailing love, for he has seen my troubles, and he cares about the anguish of my soul” Thoughts: Recently I had the privilege of talking with a couple of professional gunsmiths. I marveled at their knowledge of, and expertise in, the gun world. I am blessed to have acquaintances like them, people that I can ask my questions and get some interesting perspectives. One of them is probably the most positive person I have ever been around. This is interesting because his wife is battling cancer, he has many health issues, and their 40-year-old son has many health issues as well. One day I asked him, “With all that you have going on, how do you always manage to stay so positive?” In answer he said, “What happens if you take a chair and stand on it, then ask someone to take your hand and pull you down? It’s not too hard, is it? Now, what happens

This Devotion was written by Sportsmen Devotional and posted with permission Bible Study Verse: Mark 6:50-51  Because they all saw Him and were terrified. Immediately He spoke to them and said, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." Then He climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed. (NIV)  Thoughts: Have you ever been enjoying a day out on a lake in your canoe, inflatable, Jon boat, or kayak and as you head to shore, the inevitable strong winds come up? It wouldn't have been too much of a problem, but your boat is powered by oars! After paddling awhile and not getting anywhere, you were probably frustrated and a bit tired. You might even have been filled with a little anxiety if you also saw a storm approaching. You are not alone in this experience. Check out Mark 6:47-55. The disciples also experienced it. After feeding the five thousand, Jesus saw His disciples straining at the oars against the wind and walked out to

This Devotion was written by Sportsmen Devotional and posted with permission Bible Study Verse James 1:19  My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, (NIV)  Thoughts When I go fly fishing, the first thing I always do is observe my surroundings. What flies are currently hatching? Where are the deeper pools that might be holding bigger fish? What obstacles do I need to look out for as I cast? A great day of fishing starts with being quick to observe and slow to start casting. I believe this principle holds true in our relationships. In fact, it’s Biblical. When my children annoy me or a co-worker upsets me, I’m often quick to get angry or offer a snappy comeback. It is rare for me to pay attention, to listen, to think about what’s really going on in the lives of those around me. A great conversation starts with being quick to listen and observe, which usually leads to well-timed questions and joyful intera
